Sleepovers – Yes or No?
Posted in Parenting on 07. Sep, 2009
Although my oldest daughter is only turning 4, she won’t be little for long. The years are flying by, and I’m starting to realize that many things are just around the corner. That’s why I was interested in reading this article from Mom Logic. Amanda presents the case why her 10 year old should NOT be attending sleepovers. What do you think?
One More Reason For My Kid to Hate Me [Mom Logic]
After reading this, I’m left with a few thoughts. First, I would not want my daughter to attend the sort of sleepover she’s describing. Of course many of you may think it’s harmless… and perhaps it is, but I definitely see her point. Then again, it really depends on the kids she is hanging out with, and what they plan on doing.
I remember being in middle school, and participating in exactly what she’s describing. Prank phone calls to boys, a Ouija board (I have strong feelings AGAINST those, by the way), and harmless defacement of property. Of course we were up to no good, but then again, these sorts of things can happen whether it’s 1am or 1pm. Personally, I think the most important thing is to know who your kids are hanging out with, and to have a close and open relationship with them. I don’t want to put my daughter in an awkward position at a sleepover, but I also don’t want to be too overprotective.
